Make up a batch of these homemade ham and cheese pockets using the famous “2-Ingredient Dough” and you won’t believe how easy and delicious they are! This is a kid-tested recipe. Also called “hot ham and cheese” sandwiches or “ham and cheese bread” my homemade ham and cheese hot pockets are a quick and comforting meal.
Did you grow up eating Hot Pockets like I did? Comforting and easy enough to heat up for an after-school snack, these were a regular snack for me. And somewhere, between middle school and graduating college, I had totally forgotten about them.
And then, while putting some frozen berries into the freezer at my office, I saw a pack of Hot Pockets. And all those memories of childhood flooded back. I was determined to make some for my daughter to try, and I told myself I’d pick up my favorite flavor – “ham and cheese hot pockets” next time I was in the grocery store.
And then I read the ingredient list.
Look, there’s nothing wrong with eating whatever sounds good, and we don’t demonize food here at easymacromeals.com. But considering a “hot pocket” is just ham, cheese, and dough, I was pretty confident I could make a ham and cheese hot pocket in my home kitchen.
Why You’ll Love My Homemade Ham and Cheese Hot Pockets
Simple Recipe: We’re only using a few ingredients here, and some of them are totally optional. Your favorite ham, some cheddar cheese, and a batch of 2-ingredient dough. I like to add in a bit of dijon mustard and garlic powder for flavor, but you’re welcome to skip those if you want. And I love the toasty golden color we get with a simple egg wash before baking, but again, totally optional if you’re looking to keep this EXTRA simple.
Better Macros: My homemade hot pockets have less calories, less fat, less carbs, and more than double the protein then the ones you find in the grocer’s freezer section! They are also larger and more filling!!! My goal, as always, is to find ways of recreating our favorite meals in a more macro-friendly way so we can eat them more often and still stay within our goals!
Ham and Cheese Pockets Ingredients
Self-Rising Flour: This recipe calls for self-rising flour. If you don’t have self-rising flour, you can substitute 1 cup all-purpose flour + 1.5 teaspoons baking powder + 0.25 teaspoons salt.
Plain, Non-Fat Greek Yogurt: My recipe uses Greek yogurt, which is a thicker yogurt. You can substitute regular non-fat yogurt, but will need to add a bit more flour to get the right consistency.
Spices and Seasonings: We’ll be using garlic powder, salt, and some dijon mustard to jazz things up.
Ham and Cheese: I used a Black Forest ham and cheddar cheese, but you can use whatever style of ham and type of cheese you prefer.
Egg Wash: We’ll be using one whole egg + a splash of water.
How To Make Ham and Cheese Hot Pockets
Start by slicing the ham into small pieces and adding it to a bowl. Add in the shredded cheese, and lightly mix. Set aside.
In a small bowl, you’ll mix together your self-rising flour, salt, garlic powder and Greek yogurt with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
Using clean hands, knead dough for about 2 minutes or until you get a smooth dough ball. Add more flour if it is too sticky.
Sprinkle a little flour on your surface, and divide the dough ball into 4 equal portions.
Roll each portion out to approximately a 6×10 inch size. Sprinkle a bit of flour if needed to keep dough from sticking to your rolling pin.
Brush half of your rolled out dough with mustard.
And then sprinkle on 1/4 of the ham and cheese mixture over the mustard.
Fold over the dough and tightly press around the edges to seal your hot pocket.
Repeat steps until all 4 pieces are stuffed and wrapped. Make an egg wash by whisking one whole egg with a splash of water.
Brush egg wash over hot pockets and bake at 400 degrees until golden brown.
