Craving some Mickey D’s but don’t want to splurge on the calories? Enter my Big Mac casserole. All the classic flavors you crave in one convenient “cheeseburger and french fry” casserole.
I feel like Big Mac casserole is one of those recipes that my family requests over and over. Everyone loves burgers at my house, and there is something so craveable about that “special sauce“. And don’t worry, we’ve added potatoes to the recipe so you’ll get that “burger and fries” vibe without needing to leave your house.
Big Mac casserole is exactly what it sounds like – America’s favorite burger and fries, but in a hearty casserole form! This is a great recipe for meal prep, just keep your toppings in a separate container so you can reheat the casserole and then add the crisp veggies on top.
Why You’ll Love This Big Mac Bake:
- Simple Recipe: This recipe is pretty simple, we brown and season ground beef, and then bake it with potatoes and cheese. Once it’s finished baking, top with your favorite burger toppings and some “special sauce”.
- Everyone loves a burger and fries: You can serve this cheeseburger casserole to even the pickiest of eaters, and it’s adult AND kid-tested.
- Naturally Gluten-Free: Want all the flavor of a Big Mac but not the gluten? We got you covered!
Big Mac Casserole Tips:
If you don’t think you’ll finish the entire casserole in one sitting, I recommend putting the cheeseburger toppings on your bowl, instead of the on top of the entire casserole. That way your cold toppings won’t get soggy when you go to reheat leftovers.
This Big Mac bake is a balanced meal with lean protein, vegetables, carbs and healthy fats so I love to serve it as is, but if you don’t have the room in your macros budget for extra carbs, you can leave out the potatoes. It’s still delicious and filling without.
If you don’t love “special sauce” you can sub a bbq sauce, or even just extra ketchup and mustard.
If you want to include even more vegetables, you can turn this cheeseburger and french fry casserole into a salad! Serve the Big Mac bake on top of a large bed of greens, and add in cucumbers, and extra tomatoes.

Spices
We’re keeping it simple with salt, pepper, and garlic powder
Potatoes
You can’t have a burger without fries, so we’ve included potatoes in our casserole. We’ll be baking them, instead of deep frying them so you’ll get all the classic flavor without all the grease.
Big Mac flavor
We’ll be adding some ketchup, mustard, onion, and chopped up pickles to the ground beef for flavor, topping with cheddar cheese before baking and then drizzling the casserole with “special sauce” before serving.
Favorite cheeseburger casserole toppings
Lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles are my personal favorites.
How To Make Big Mac Casserole
You’re going to start by cutting your potatoes into a tiny dice, the smaller the better. Potatoes take a long time to cook, so we’re going to get them started early. Add your diced potatoes to your casserole dish and season with salt and pepper. Put them in a preheated oven.
While the potatoes are baking, we can cook the rest of the casserole ingredients.
First, we’ll brown our ground beef and onions. I throw them in together, and crumble the ground beef as it cooks. Because we’re using a lean ground beef, there shouldn’t be any fat to drain. Season the ground beef with salt and pepper.
Once the meat is browned and the onions soft, add in garlic powder, ketchup, mustard and 1/4 cup water. Simmer for one minute. Then add in your chopped pickles and give it a good stir to combine.
Next, using pot holders, carefully remove the potatoes. They should be al dente. Add the ground beef on top of the potatoes, and then top with cheese.
Bake until potatoes are soft and cheese is melted (about 20 minutes). Top with your favorite burger toppings, drizzle on the SPECIAL SAUCE and your “cheeseburger and french fry casserole” is ready!

Big Mac Casserole (Cheeseburger and French Fry Casserole)
Ingredients
Special Sauce
- 4 tbsp (60g) light mayo
- 3 tbsp (50g) ketchup
- 2-4 pickle chips, chopped
- 1 tbsp pickle juice
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
Big Mac Bake
- 1 large (300g) russet potato, very finely diced
- spray oil
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 lb (454g) lean ground beef
- 1 small (65g) onion, chopped
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp (17g) ketchup
- 1 tbsp (14g) mustard
- 1/4 cup water
- 5 pickle chips, chopped
- 1 cup (88g) cheddar cheese
Big Mac Casserole Toppings – optional
- tomatoes, chopped
- pickles
- shredded lettuce
- chopped onions
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix together all the special sauce ingredients. Refrigerate so all the flavors have a chance to meld together while you make the rest of the casserole.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Finely dice your potatoes, about 1/4 inch dice. Add to your baking dish.
- Spray potatoes lightly with cooking spray and generously season with salt and pepper. Potatoes need more salt than you might think, I added 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of pepper. Give it a good stir to coat and put in the oven to parbake while you cook the ground beef.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the lean ground beef and onions.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook, crumbling the beef as you go until the meat is no longer pink and onions are soft.
- Because we are using lean ground beef, there should not be any fat to drain. If you are using a higher fat ground beef, drain off any excess grease.
- Add in the garlic powder, ketchup, mustard and 1/4 cup of water. Stir and simmer for 1 minute.
- Add in the chopped pickles, and give it a good stir.
- Using pot holders or an oven mitt, carefully removed the potatoes from the oven. They should be al dente – mostly tender.
- Layer the ground beef mixture on top of the potatoes and top with the cheese.
- Bake until cheese is melted and potatoes are soft. (About 15-20 more minutes)
- Remove casserole from oven, and top with your favorite burger toppings. Drizzle on the special sauce and serve immediately.
